A network switch is one of the cheapest and most useful upgrades you can make to a home network, and also one of the least understood. If you have ever run out of ports on the back of your router, wanted a wired connection in a room the router cannot reach, or planned out a set of security cameras, a switch is almost certainly the answer. Here is what a switch actually does, the difference between the types you will see for sale, and how to pick the right one.

What a network switch actually does

A switch adds Ethernet ports to your network and lets wired devices talk to each other and to the rest of your network at full speed. You run a single cable from one of your router's LAN ports to the switch, and every device you plug into the switch joins the same network - the same IP range, the same internet connection - as if it were plugged into the router directly.

Under the hood, a switch learns which device sits on which port by its MAC address and forwards each packet only to the port that needs it. That is what separates a switch from the old-fashioned hub, which blindly copied every packet to every port. Every switch sold today is a true switch, and hubs are effectively extinct.

A switch is not a router

This is the most common point of confusion, so it is worth being clear: a switch does not replace your router. The router is the brains of the network - it connects you to the internet, hands out addresses over DHCP, and runs the firewall. A switch does none of that. It simply adds more wired lanes to the network the router already runs. Think of the router as the on-ramp to the internet and the switch as extra lanes on your own road. You will always have exactly one router, but you can add as many switches as you have places that need ports.

Unmanaged, smart, and managed switches

Switches come in three broad tiers, and the right one depends entirely on how much control you want:

  • Unmanaged: plug-and-play with no settings at all. You plug it in and it works. This is what most homes want - cheap, silent, and nothing to configure.
  • Smart (web-managed): adds a web interface for the features enthusiasts actually use - most importantly VLANs for putting smart-home devices on their own isolated segment, plus basic QoS and, on many models, link aggregation and port mirroring. This is the sweet spot if you want to segment your network without paying for enterprise gear.
  • Managed: full control through a web UI, a command line, and sometimes an API, with the complete enterprise feature set (spanning tree, granular QoS, SNMP monitoring). Powerful, but needlessly complex for almost every home.

If you are not sure, buy unmanaged. Step up to a smart switch only when you have a concrete reason, and VLAN-based segmentation is the usual one.

Port speeds: gigabit and multi-gig

Gigabit (1 Gbps) has been the wired standard for years and is still fine for most homes. What has changed recently is multi-gig: 2.5GbE switches are now cheap and worth considering if you have gigabit-plus internet, move large files to a NAS, or are feeding a WiFi 7 access point over a wired backhaul. Keep in mind that speed is set by the slowest link in the chain, so a fast switch only helps if the cable, the router port, and the end device all keep up. The good news on cabling is that most existing Cat5e handles 2.5GbE without rewiring the house.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

Some switches can send power and data over the same Ethernet cable, which is ideal for devices that live where there is no power outlet - security cameras, wireless access points, and video doorbells. The relevant IEEE standards, from oldest to newest, are:

  • 802.3af (PoE): up to 15.4 W supplied per port, about 12.95 W reaching the device.
  • 802.3at (PoE+): up to 30 W per port, about 25.5 W at the device - enough for most cameras and access points.
  • 802.3bt (PoE++): 60 W per port for Type 3 and up to roughly 90 to 100 W for Type 4, for power-hungry gear.

When shopping, check two numbers, not one: the per-port standard and the switch's total power budget. A switch can advertise PoE+ on every port yet lack the total wattage to drive all of them at full draw at the same time.

How to choose a switch

A handful of practical guidelines cover most buying decisions:

  • Port count: count what you need and buy the next size up. Common sizes are 5, 8, 16, and 24 ports, and remember one port is used for the uplink back to your router.
  • Speed: gigabit is the floor; choose 2.5GbE only if the rest of your chain can actually use it.
  • Noise: pick a fanless model for any room you actually sit in. Most home switches up to 8 ports are silent.
  • PoE: pay for it only if you have devices that need it, and size the power budget to match.
  • Management: unmanaged unless you specifically want VLANs or monitoring.

Where a switch fits in your network

The simplest setup is a single cable from a spare LAN port on your router to the switch, which then fans out to nearby wired devices. A switch is also the perfect partner for a wired backhaul: run Ethernet, MoCA, or powerline to a distant room, then drop a small switch there to serve several devices from that one link - a desk, a TV, a game console, and a mesh node or access point.
