The Linksys EA4500 is a sleek router that offers a number of unique features aimed at improving networking. While far from being a robust router, it is an economical device designed primarily for the average home user looking to get decent performance from a router that is easy to use. Cisco also introduced the Cisco Connect Cloud software with the release of the Linksys EA4500, which is an excellent software that seeks to improve home networking experience.

It is similar to the Linksys E4200 v2, featuring a sleek design and dual-band support. It supports up to 450Mbps Wi-Fi speed on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. It also has a powerful processor for network storage when connected to an external hard drive via a USB port. It allows you to connect up to 50 clients. It lacks support for 802.11ac though. Other than logging in to the Cisco Connect Cloud account, there is no other way for managing it. The performance on the 2.4Ghz band also needs improvement.

That said, it is still a decent router that is appropriate for home network and quite affordable compared to other routers with similar capabilities. However, if you are concerned about having to remain connected to Cisco at all times while using this router, you should consider a routing device from another manufacturer.

It resembles the EA4200 in design. It comes in the shape of a jewelry box with smooth finish on the top. It features 4 gigabit LAN ports. One gigabit WAN port is also available to connect it to an Internet source. There is a button for Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) feature. It also has USB2.0 support for connecting to a printing or storage device. A reset button is also found on the rear of the device.

Owing to the transition to Cisco Connect Cloud software, you are required to set up a free account with the company to access the router’s settings. It also requires you to stay connected to Cisco at all times in order to access the Internet. It has a new interface, and users may take a while to find out where things are on the new version.

There are generally two parts of the new interface, router settings and apps. Apps are the features included in the router whereas the router settings include the basic wireless configuration.

For router setup, you are required to access the default IP address of the router, log on to the Cisco Connect Cloud account and link the router to your account. To edit settings or manage the router’s features, you can sign in to Cisco Connect Cloud from a Web interface or a mobile app.

It does allow you to access only the router settings without connecting to Cisco Connect Cloud. However, you must also disconnect form the Internet in order to achieve this. Also, if the Cisco Connect Cloud portal is offline, you cannot access the router settings and features.

It is a dual-band router with two separate access points for 2.4Ghz band and 5Ghz band. Each band delivers up to 450Mbps of Wi-Fi speed. The USB port can connect to an external storage device of any capacity. The contents of the connected hard drive can be shared across the entire network. It delivers decent performance even at ranges longer than 100 feet. Other routers with similar capabilities generally show slower connectivity at such range.

The Linksys EA4500 is a useful router for home networking needs. It offers fast Wi-Fi speed, decent range, and a stable connection.

Linksys EA2750 Review

Any home or small business having three to four PCs or other devices that use Internet connections would benefit from using a Linksys EA2750 router. The device offers a nice combination of features at an extremely affordable price. The router is also a worthwhile purchase if devices use Windows 7 or above operating systems. The features are also desirable if you eventually desire to ramp up your service speed or an Internet conversion to IPv6 occurs.

The Linksys EA2750 is one of the newest models in the company’s EA line of routers. The devices differ from the older E series units in terms of software upgrades. The EA routers were created to gain access to the Cisco Connect Cloud, which provides consumers with remote access to their established network via a browser or a mobile device. EA router owners will also have the option of adding apps that control appliances or perform other functions using the wireless network. However, overall, Cisco Linksys routers provide commendable performance.

Linksys EA2750 Overview

The EA2750 is compact, measures 8.9 x 2.6 x 9.3 inches, weighs 1.6 pounds, has a black matte finish and an overall flat design that reminds many of a spaceship. Setting Up the EA2750

The package comes with a CD that provides set-up instruction. However, users can easily login to the router’s configuration screen directly to manually configure the device. The set-up process takes less than 15 minutes. When using the CD, the wizard checks for available updates and automatically allows the router to configure itself. The device also generates passwords that can be altered if desired.

The user-friendly Cisco Connect software loads following installation. Once installed, you can manage guest access limitations, determine parental controls and adjust other basic settings. Advanced pages enable users to establish port forwarding and other complicated tasks. The router also comes equipped with IPv6 settings in the event that local Internet functions on this setting. Linksys also features Smart Wi-Fi software that enables you to access and manage your network via phone from any location.

EA2750 Security

The router protects personal connections against online invasion using WPA/WPA2 Wi-Fi encryption codes. The Linksys E8350 dual band Wi-Fi router is known for its fast performance on the 5GHz band as well as high-end Wi-Fi specs. It is also more affordable than other competing routers on the market.

Much like its competitors, the Asus RT-AC87U and Netgear R7500, it delivers superb performance on the 5GHz band. It also has impressive storage capacity when connected to an external storage device. The old interface of the E series explains its slower performance on the 2.4GHz band.

It makes sense to purchase this product if you’re looking for decent performance on a low budget. It’s also an excellent choice for users who need Wi-Fi support on the 5GHz band. Most of the new Wi-Fi clients offer support for the 5GHz frequency band.

Design

In terms of design, the Linksys E8350 resembles the EA series. However, it still retains the Web interface of the previous E series routers, such as the E3200.

It comes with four detachable antennas, two on the sides and two on the rear of the device. The routers are not very long in size. You can also tilt the antennas in different angles for improved signal reception. For best results, Linksys recommends users to have the two rear antennas point straight up and the other two antennas tilted at 45 degrees.

It hosts one Gigabit WAN port for connecting to an Internet source and four Gigabit LAN ports for wired clients. Other ports include a USB 3.0 port and another port that can be used as an eSATA port or a USB 2.0 port. These ports can be used to connect the router to a printing or storage device, allowing the router to function as a network attached store (NAS) server.

It lacks the typical indicator lights found in routers. This can make it difficult to tell if the network is connected to the Internet or not. In fact, you cannot even figure out if the router is powered on or not.

Setup and Interface

The E series router doesn’t come with Linksys Smart Wi-Fi remote access support. The Smart Wi-Fi is a useful feature found in many Linksys routers. Using this feature, users can manage the home network by logging in to an account with Linksys through a mobile app or web browser.

Other than the missing Smart Wi-Fi feature, the E8350 retains the setup and interface of the E series. The Linksys Connect setup software comes in a CD enclosed in the box. The software can also be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. It offers a simple, step by step process for configuring the router to the Internet. The software can also be used to manage Wi-Fi and other router settings.

While using the software is a good option for basic users looking to connect to the Internet, advanced settings and options are only accessible from the Web interface. Using the software has another drawback too. It makes the password for router’s network settings the same as the Wi-Fi network password, which is a security hazard. Anyone connecting to the Wi-Fi network is then able to access the router’s interface and alter the network settings. As such, it is a better option to use the Web interface for router configuration.

The default IP address for connecting to the router’s Web interface is 192.168.1.1. It will prompt for username and password. The default value for both fields is ‘admin’.

It offers an organized and responsive interface. Many of the settings are instantly implemented without requiring a restart.

The Linksys E2500 is an economical dual-band router by Cisco. It is an elegant and compact router in the E series of Wireless-N routers introduced by the manufacturer. Compared to the higher-end E3200 and E4200 models of the same series, the E2500 lacks some features, such as a USB port, a Gigabit Ethernet port and support for 450Mbps wireless speed. But the lower price explains the missing features.

The E2500 is a stylish router suitable for home use. It comes with Cisco Connect software that makes it easy for users to connect to a network. It offers a limited range and is suitable for small spaces, such as an apartment. Its speed is also comparatively slow. For users seeking a powerful router, the E4200 would make a better choice.

Design

Other than the missing USB port, the E2500 and E3200 have the same design. It has a flat design with internal antennas. It is intended to be placed on a flat surface and cannot be mounted on a wall.

It has one WAN port and four LAN ports towards the back of the router. The power connector and the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button is also found on the back. The E2500 doesn’t have any status LEDs on the front. The only indicator light observed in the E2500 is the LEDs on the network port.

It doesn’t come with a user manual. A CD is enclosed in the box for installing Cisco Connect software. The software provides basic setup as well as ongoing maintenance of the network.

Ease of Use

When you run the CD to install the software, it will provide a tutorial on connecting the router to an Internet source, such as broadband Internet. The software automatically configures the router’s settings to connect to the Internet. The installation does not take more than 5 minutes. You will need an active Internet connection for the installation to complete. If you have any problem in the setup, the software will explain how to contact Cisco’s support team.

When the router is successfully connected to the Internet, the software will designate a name and password for your wireless connection. You also have the option of changing the name and password. The name will be the same for 2.4GHz as well as 5GHz bands.

Cisco Connect is also used to turn the guest network on and off. The guest network is only available in the 2.4GHz band. Speed test tool and parental control features are also accessible from Cisco Connect. For advanced features, such as accessing network storage or setting up the router to a network that isn’t connected to the Internet, you will have to log on to the router’s Web Interface by clicking the “advanced setup” link in Cisco Connect. If you haven’t setup the router using Cisco Connect, the default password to log in to the router’s Web interface is “admin” whereas the username field has to be left blank. If the router has been configured, the username will be “admin” whereas the password will be that of your wireless network.

The E2500 supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and a third guest network on 2.4GHz band. Guest networking allows you to share Internet with others without giving them access to local resources on the network, such as printers and files.

Overall, the E2500 is an easy to use router with a decent look and reasonable price, making it suitable for an apartment or small home.

The Linksys E1200 is a basic wireless router well suited for surfing the web and printing wirelessly in the home. This router incorporates five Ethernet ports and meets IEEE 802.11n Wi-Fi requirements and offers a data throughput of 300Mbps. It offers backwards compatibility for Wireless G devices. The E1200 is packaged with the router, user guide, setup software, Ethernet cable, and power adapter. The minimum system requirements are an internet browser and a wireless network enabled PC or Mac with CD/DVD drive.

Security

Linksys E1200 offers remarkable control over web surfing capabilities and internet access. In some cases, the device is used by parents to block specific pages and internet access for students on school nights. Visitors using the Linksys E1200 access the internet using a password-protected log-in. The guest must use a designated network and a password to connect to the internet. It is important to add that guests are not allowed to access any files or documents on the networked computers.

Ease of Use

The Linksys E1200 allows users to create an Easy Setup Key. This feature is useful for connecting additional devices and computers. The router also uses an intuitive browser-based utility to manage advanced configuration settings. This option is typically for users with advanced knowledge who understand router administration.

This router includes a Universal Plug and Play option which allows Windows to automatically configure the Wi-Fi router. This configuration supports various internet applications such as gaming and conferencing. There is a simple Wi-Fi Protected Setup button that makes adding and configuring devices effortless.

In the event the router needs factory default settings, there are two methods to restore these settings. The first method involves using the browser to restore the settings via the Administration tab. The second method is completed by pressing and holding the device’s reset button for five seconds.

Linksys has released the Linksys EA6300 AC1200, which is an 802.11ac router. It is a fast wireless router with a number of useful features.

Compared to 802.11n routers, 802.11ac is almost 3 times faster. The Linksys EA6300 AC1200 is powered by dual band technology and is capable of transferring data wirelessly at 1.2 Gbps. It is a suitable choice for heavy data users and ensures uninterrupted access to HD streaming, video conferencing and gaming.

Design

It retains the design elements of other versions of the EA series routers. The top panel indicator light sees a slight change. It used to be a brightly lit Cisco logo that has now been replaced with a thin green bar.

On the back of the router is the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button, 4 Ethernet ports, an Internet port and a USB port. The power and reset buttons are also found on the back.

The EA6300 AC1200 is designed to rest on a flat surface. There are mounting slots on the bottom of the device, but they are towards the left side and if clung to a wall, the connections will point to the right.

Under the casing, it has five internal antennas, two of which are for 2.4 GHz band and the remaining three for 5GHz band. The 5GHz antennas are found on the left, center and right, whereas the 2.4GHz antennas are on the left front and back corners.

Features

It retains many of the features found in its predecessor, the EA6500 AC1750 router. To access the smart features, you are required to create an account with Linksys Smart Wi-Fi. If you don’t want to sign up, you can access all the router features directly by clicking the “local access” link.

Compared to the EA6500, it yields better performance. The EA6500 was powered by Broadcom’s single-core CPU whereas the EA6300 gets dual-core CPU, which explains the enhanced performance. It also delivers nearly double the performance offered by EA6500 for writing and reading files to a USB3.0 drive. The upgrade from USB2.0 in EA6500 to USB3.0 in EA6300 also explains the increased performance.

The 5GHz wireless throughput of the EA6300 is almost the same running downlink compared to the EA6500, but significantly better running uplink. This is because both the EA6300 and EA6500 use outboard 5GHz amplifiers and the same Broadcom BCM4360 radio. EA6300’s 2.4GHz throughput is not as high as EA6500.

Overall, the EA6300 AC1200 wireless router is a smart deal that outweighs the features and capability of EA6500. It is also less expensive than the EA6500.

Laser vs Inkjet Printers | What is the Difference?

If you don’t know the difference between an inkjet and a laser printer, have no fear! Buying a printer for your home network doesn’t have to be such a pain in the you-know-what. I’ll explain what your options are and how they will affect your wallet in the short-term and the long-term.

Laser Printers

Inkjet Printers

inkjet printerInkjet printers spray tiny, microscopic dots of ink onto the paper. This ink absorbs into the paper and “bleeds” a little. You can purchase special paper that will not bleed like normal paper will. You can print word documents on an inkjet printer just fine, but the words will not be as crisp, due to the slight bleeding. The bleeding effect is actually useful for photos because gradients work well. These are an excellent choice if you print more images or photos than anything else. Most photo printers are actually inkjet printers with a few extra features.

Cost of Ownership

You will find that inkjet printers are a bit cheaper than laser printers. This goes for both the printers themselves and the ink/toner. However, inkjet printers have a significantly higher cost per page due to them being less efficient. So the cartridges will be cheaper for an inkjet, but you will have to buy them much more often.

Black and White vs Color

You can purchase black and white (monochrome) versions as well as color versions of both laser printers and inkjet printers. What About All-In-One Printers?

When you purchase an all-in-one printer, you still have to choose between laser or inkjet. The two technologies are very different. Laser and inkjet all-in-one printers both typically offer printing, faxing, copying and scanning features.

1. Set Up the Modem

Most of the time, your ISP will send a technician out to set up a modem for you when you start a new contract with them. The process is very simple. You should be able to accomplish this if your ISP doesn’t do this for you by following these steps:

  • Don’t plug in the power, this will be the last step
  • Simply plug in the designated cable (it’s different for cable and DSL) into the modem. It will only fit in one place.
  • Now plug in the power
  • Assess the light activity (read below)

Assessing Light Activity

There will be several lights on the front. Usually labelled Power, Send, Receive, Online, and PC/Activity on a typical modem by Motorola. The Power should light up solid. The Send and Receive lights will blink, which means the modem is trying to communicate with your ISP. After some constant back and forth communication between your modem and your ISP, the Online light should come on. This means the modem has successfully connected with your ISP.

Note that this is a very general description of what the lights mean. You should read your modem’s documentation to get an understanding of what each light means on your particular modem.

Troubleshooting the Modem

If the Receive light never blinks, or if the Online light never turns on, ensure you are plugged into the correct cable that your ISP technician setup for you. If you are plugged in correctly and the correct lights are still not lit up, let it sit for a few minutes (around 5 minutes) and then unplug the power from the modem and plug it back in to start the process over. If it is still not connecting then your best bet is to contact your ISP.

If none of the lights come on, try plugging it into a different outlet. Unplug a lamp or something you know is working and try plugging your modem into that outlet. If none of the lights come on still, your ISP should be able to replace it, if they provided you a faulty modem. If you bought your own modem from somewhere else then you may want to return and exchange it for another one.

In some cases, you’ll also need to contact your ISP so they can activate your modem. This involves giving them the modem’s model number, serial number and MAC address.

2. Setup the Router

Once you know your modem is working properly, unplug the power from the modem. This is an important step before setting up the router. If the router you have is used (anything but brand new) you may want to reset it to factory settings first, by using a pen or pin to press in the reset button. That way you know there won’t be any settings in there that will hinder the setup process.

  • Connect your router to your modem with an Ethernet cable. Usually your modem comes with one that is a few feet long. If you don’t have one, you can either purchase one pre-made at your local department store or make your own. There should only be one port on the modem where your Ethernet cable will fit. Look for a port labelled something like “WAN” or “Internet” on the router and plug the other end in there.
  • Connect a computer to one of the LAN ports on your router. This will be a port that is usually labelled with a number or it may simply be labeled “LAN”. Typically, you will find more than one of these ports grouped together. You don’t want to plug your computer directly into a port labeled something like “WAN” or “Internet”.
  • Plug in the power

Logging Into Your Router

Once your router is powered on and connected to the modem, your computer that is wired to the router’s LAN port should have internet access. You can setup your router how you’d like from this computer initially. The settings you may want to change will be covered here.

To login to your router’s administrative interface, open your favorite browser on your computer. Everything will be modified within the browser. For the URL, you will enter a specific IP address. This IP address is different across many manufacturers. You may need to check the router’s documentation to find out what the default network is for your router. For your convenience, here is a list of common settings for routers based on manufacturer:

Another way to find out your router’s IP address is to check your computer’s network configuration. The default gateway will be your router’s IP address. Once you enter this address into your browser’s address bar, you will be prompted to enter a username and password, which you can find in your router’s documentation, or it may be listed above.

Setting Up Wifi

If you want to know how to setup a home network for WiFi access, consider these settings:

  • Network Name (SSID) – This is the name of your wireless network. This is what will show up in the list of networks when you connect to wifi. You can name it whatever you would like. Just keep in mind that your neighbors may be able to see your network name, if they are close enough. Don’t use any personal information in your network name.
  • Network Mode – This typically allows you to choose between Wireless-B, Wireless-G, Wireless-N, and so on. You may even have other options including mixed. For typical use, it’s safe to leave it at the default setting(usually mixed). However, if you know for a fact that all the devices you will be adding to your wireless network support a certain technology (for example, Wireless-N) then it may be beneficial to select that specific mode. Again, if you are unsure then just leave it at the default setting.
  • SSID Broadcast – This determines whether or not your network will show up in the list of networks when someone scans for wifi (including when YOU scan for wifi networks). If you turn this off, then instead of simply selecting your network from the list of available networks, you will have to manually type in the name of the network to add a device to it.
  • Security Mode – The overwhelming majority will tell you the best option is WPA2-Personal (or simply WPA2). WEP can easily be cracked in seconds, leaving your home network insecure. However, keep in mind that you should still use a strong password (Passphrase, which is covered next) when using WPA2. Even if you use WPA2, a weak password still makes it easier to crack. Use a combination of numbers, letters (upper and lower case) and special characters.
  • Passphrase – The password that will be required to join your wireless network. Use something you don’t use for anything else. Personally, I like to write my password on a sticky note or a piece of tape and stick it on my router so I can always remember it later. The only way anyone will see that sticky is if they are inside your house and physically standing at your router. So people that are outside trying to connect to your network will not be able to see that sticky and login. If your router is in a common community area, you may not want to do this.

Securing Your Wireless Home Network

Applying all of these settings is not necessary. The best security system is one with layers. You can apply them all or select a few that work for you. Personally, I find that I can get away with only setting WPA2 encryption and maybe 1 or 2 other of these methods because I do not live in a densely populated area. If you live in a heavily populated city, an apartment, condo, dorm, barracks, or something like that, it may be a smart idea to apply several of these layers.

  • Change the default password. The first thing you should always do is change the default password to login to the router. Otherwise, anyone can easily login and change your settings without your knowledge.
  • Use WPA2 encryption for wifi. This is the single biggest, most important advice a home network admin can implement.
  • Don’t broadcast your SSID. It may be annoying to have to type in your SSID manually, but you should only have to do that once for each device you have. If your network does not show up when other people are searching for networks, it will be “out of sight, out of mind.” It will be very difficult for anyone to even thinking to connect if they don’t know the network exists.
  • Use wireless mac filtering. Wireless MAC filter setup guide. Every single device that is capable of connecting to a network has a unique mac address that is assigned to the hardware when it is manufactured. It’s sort of like an IP address, but it’s longer and its hard coded into each device. This adds another layer of security to your network. On its own, a wireless mac filter is not a great security measure because it can easily be sidestepped by someone who knows what they’re doing. However, it will keep the majority of people out of your network. It is recommended to implement additional security layers if you choose to implement a wireless mac address filter.
  • Limit the number of devices that are able to connect. Some routers let you set a number of devices that are authorized to connect to the router at any given time. For example, my Linksys WRT100 RangePlus router allows 50 devices to connect by default. I don’t own 50 devices, so I would take this number way down to below 10, depending on how many devices I want to connect (like phones, laptops, etc.)
  • Don’t allow access to the admin interface via wifi. If your router provides this ability, it adds yet another layer of security. The only downside to this is that you can only modify your router settings from a computer that is plugged in (wired) to a LAN port. However, if someone tries to crack your network from a wireless connection they won’t even be able to see the administrator settings.

The network security key is the password or pass phrase that you use to authenticate with your home network. In order to establish a secure connection with your wireless router, you have to provide the key to prove that you are authorized to do so. The key is established on a setting in the wireless router, and each device connecting to it will be required to match it.

You can view the security key from the settings on computers already connected to WiFi:

Windows 10

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Settings
  3. Then Select Network and Internet > Status > Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Select your wifi name next to the connections section.
  5. Select Wireless Properties in the Wifi-Status Menu.
  6. Click on the Security tab
  7. Check the box that says “Show characters”, if it is not already checked
  8. The Network security key box will display your key. You can use this same key to connect other devices to your network.

Windows 7

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Under “Network and Internet” click “View network status and tasks”
  4. On the left hand menu, click “Manage Wireless Networks”, then locate your wireless network on the new menu
  5. Right-click on your wireless network and select Properties

Macs

  1. On the top of the screen, select “Go”
  2. Now select “Utilities”
  3. Double click on “Keychain Access” and then select your network from the list provided.
  4. Check the box that says “Show password” (You may have to enter your Mac’s Administrator password and then click “Allow” to do this.)
  5. Your network security key will display your key. You can use this same key to connect other devices to your network.

Find the Security Key in the Router

If you’re not currently connected, you’ll have to find the security key on your router. In your router, your security key will be located within the wireless security settings. For example, if you have WPA2 encryption on your network, the key will most likely be nested within there. All routers are different, so check the links below for specific instructions.

In some cases you might be able to find the security key printed on the router. This is often seen if you are using a router that was provided by your Internet Service Provider or if you are renting one from them. Locate the Router and check the labels to see if any of them contain a Network Security Key. If you find a key on the label and it does not work then the key might have been changed at a later time and you will need to use the other methods mentioned to obtain your network security key.
